The Challenge

A mid-market recordkeeper was operating its retirement technology platform — spanning both OMNI and Relius systems — without standardized production environments, without dedicated operations staff, and with changes being made directly in production. The operational risk to production systems was significant and increasing.

The engagement was signed by the SVP and Chief Information Officer, reflecting the severity of the situation. The client needed experienced hands immediately.

Our Approach

Convergent deployed five senior consultants who understood the OMNI and Relius platforms from years of hands-on operation.

Immediate Stabilization — Within weeks, our team established standardized production environments, implemented change management controls, and eliminated the practice of making changes directly in production systems.

Governance Framework — We built formal governance processes including incident management procedures, escalation protocols, and daily status reporting. These were not theoretical frameworks — they were operational processes that our team helped implement and operate.

FRP Strategy & Architecture — Our Team Lead for Consulting & Architecture led the development of the client's FRP strategy. This included industry benchmarking, a comprehensive Relius decommissioning roadmap, and guidance on the FIS FRP transition timeline.

Ongoing Platform Support — Beyond stabilization, we continued to provide OMNI platform consulting, trading operations support, and legacy code modernization assistance.

The Results

The client achieved platform stability within weeks, not months. The engagement established the governance and change management processes that the organization needed to operate its retirement systems reliably.

Our FRP advisory work delivered a clear roadmap for navigating the Relius-to-FRP transition — one of the most consequential technology decisions facing TPAs and recordkeepers today.

Technology is the second-largest cost a recordkeeper carries, and the people who see it most clearly are the ones we keep asking to absorb it. The cloud proved the industry can change its mind in a decade. AI is the same story, on a faster clock.

Everyone Is Talking About FRP. Nobody Is Talking to Relius Users.

July 23, 2026·Kathy Sierra

FRP is a merger of Omni and Relius into one cloud platform, not a Relius upgrade. If you run Relius today, your migration is a different project from the one the industry is discussing — and the preparation that protects you does not need a date to start.

Retirement Is Complex. The Answer Isn't More Complexity.

June 25, 2026·Chandran Monikandan

The retirement industry's instinct is to meet a complex problem with an equally complex process. That instinct is the problem. The hard, valuable work is making it simpler.
